Barbwire compared with Versive, Synthetic Users, Hotjar and real-user testing

Versive is the closest tool; Synthetic Users interviews personas without visiting your site, Hotjar and Clarity show real visitors, and real-user testing gives you real people.

Versive
What it does well: an AI persona drives a real browser on your live site and logs every step with a screenshot, its reasoning and a video. Runs go to 50 steps, or 100. AI tests and studies with real people share one product, and its docs say that high-stakes findings need real participants.
Where Barbwire differs: Versive needs your persona text or research files and a task with a clear end state. Barbwire builds five buyer personas from your URL, and the persona decides on its own whether it would buy. Barbwire gives a yes or no, fixes ranked worst first, and where two pages contradict each other. Versive Free has no AI tests, and its trial needs a payment method; Barbwire Free has 0 runs with no card. Versive has real-participant panels and video interviews; Barbwire does not.
Synthetic Users
What it does well: AI interviews with a synthetic audience you define, with no recruiting. It can ground the personas in your own transcripts and support tickets.
Where Barbwire differs: Synthetic Users interviews personas about a product or a message. Barbwire sends a persona through your live site and shows a replay with screenshots. Synthetic Users starts at $12,500 a year after a demo; Barbwire is self-serve, from free.
Hotjar and Microsoft Clarity
What they do well: they show what real visitors do on your site, at scale. Both have a free plan, and Clarity has no traffic limit.
Where Barbwire differs: they need traffic and show where people left. Barbwire works before launch and gives one persona’s reasons in words. Use them together: the heat map shows the exit, the persona says why.
Testing with real users
What it does well: real people think out loud on video, from large panels. UserTesting offers a free test with a real person on your site, and Lyssna has a free plan with many test types.
Where Barbwire differs: Barbwire needs no recruiting and no test design: paste a URL, and a persona built from your site goes in. It gives you a likely reason in about a minute, not a real person’s quote.
When not to use Barbwire
- Your product lives behind a login. A persona visits public pages only and does not sign in.
- You need real people’s quotes, for a board or a client. Use testing with real users.
- Your site blocks bots. If a captcha or bot check stops the persona, the report says so and the run is free, but you learn nothing about the page.
One simulated persona is one point of view. Runs vary a little, so trust a flip, not a one-point move.
Questions
- What is the difference between Barbwire and Versive?
- Both send an AI persona through your live site in a real browser. Versive needs your persona text or research files and a written task, and reports whether the task was completed. Barbwire builds five buyer personas from your URL, needs no task, and says whether the persona would buy, with fixes ranked worst first.
- Does Barbwire replace Hotjar or Clarity?
- No. Hotjar and Clarity show what real visitors did, and they need traffic. Barbwire gives one persona’s reasons in words and works with zero traffic. Keep both.
- Does Barbwire replace testing with real users?
- No. Real people give you real quotes. Barbwire finds likely problems in about a minute, so the sessions you pay for go to the questions that are left.
- Which tools have a free plan with AI tests?
- As seen on 21 October 2026: Barbwire Free has 0 runs with no card. Versive Free has no AI tests, and its trial needs a payment method. Synthetic Users showed no free plan.
